Antibiotic Resistance

Did you know without effective antibiotics many routine operations like hip replacements, organ transplants, caesarean sections and treatments for sepsis or chemotherapy will become increasingly dangerous or impossible?

With such widespread use of antibiotics across the UK and worldwide, there is real danger that resistance to their effects becomes prolific and antibiotic therapy is useless.

How can this be prevented?

  • Over-use of antibiotics can lead to the development of drug-resistant bacteria which can cause serious infections.  This then has a knock on effect that any infections that are developed have no effective treatment.

  • Antibiotics can cause side effects such as rashes, thrush, stomach pains, diarrhoea, reactions to sunlight and other symptoms.  Extreme side effects can have a more detrimental impact to a persons health than the symptoms they are trying to relieve.

  • Help conserve antibiotics so that they remain effective.  Antibiotics should only be used under strict medical guidance.

  • Your actions can protect antibiotics.  To preserve the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy for future generations it is important that action is taken now.
